What is Worship? How are we to live in the everyday

February 21, 2013

Reblogged from matt's musings :

"The danger of our tendency towards experiential individualism is that it leads to a personal, abstract spirituality that is disconnected from daily life" Graham Kendrick, Christianity Magazine March 2013

I've been preparing for a 5 week workshop stream I am leading at my home church titled 'Reimagining Worship'.

It feels really timely, It feels like its been something I have been on a bit of a journey with this.

    On Matt’s blog I wrote:

“Yes please. Let’s imagine ‘worship times’ where different people are encouraged to share their gifts and to what they love as worship, where they will be encouraged to bring what they as individuals have and are, to share with the wider community, instead of insisting that we all fit a box where we have to go into a big room full of people and sing songs all the time, over, and over, and over again.”

Let’s have worship that involves our everday lives and the people we interact with, that has respect for people and justice and the creation which we are part of and called to be stewards of, and incidentally, depend on.

I’ve been a believer since I was a child but I’m feeling more and more alienated by a church that seems to want me to be a cartain shape (extrovert, charismatic, musical, evangelist) and which brushes off thoughts about creation care as “we don’t worry about that” or “Not our problem. We need to evangelise people.”

Yes, let’s reimagine worship. Not before time.

Thanks Andy, Yes really agree and resonate with what you are saying. I think we need to be a lot more creative and imaginative when it comes to song writing and the themes of songs…. Something that Engage worship and no doubt many others agree with and also there is a great open letter by Brian McLaren on this theme http://brianmclaren.net/archives/blog/open-letter-to-worship-songwrite.html

I would also agree that as well as reimagining style and content we also as you say need to reimagine worship as lifestyle and what happens in the fullness of our lives and communities we live in
